Breeding programmes

One of Frankfurt Zoo's main concerns is its commitment to species and nature conservation in accordance with the requirements of the "World Zoo Conservation Strategy" of 2015, which is why the zoo is committed to breeding and conserving rare and endangered animal species. The most important goal here is to build up demographically and genetically balanced populations that can also serve as a basis for restocking dwindling wild animal populations in the future.

Scientists at Frankfurt Zoo coordinate the breeding programmes for six animal species:

International Stud Book (ISB):
Gorilla
Rusty-spotted Cat

European Studbook (ESB):
Rhinoceros Iguana

EAZA Ex-situ Programme (EEP):
Rusty-spotted Cat
Slender Lorises
Socorro Dove
Yellow-backed Duiker
