Offspring at the Frankfurt harbour seals
Almost exactly a year after OTTO the harbour seal was born, the seal cliffs at Frankfurt Zoo are once again home to newborns.
Nursery in the cat jungle: tigress CINTA has had offspring
On 20 June, the nine-year-old Sumatran tigress CINTA gave birth to cubs. The two cubs appear to be in good health. To allow the animals to rest, the cat jungle is temporarily closed.
Thirteen offspring among the Humboldt penguins
After 36 Humboldt penguins left Frankfurt Zoo in the spring, the tailcoats have now had another addition. A total of thirteen penguin chicks have hatched since April. Most of them have now left their breeding burrows and are exploring the enclosure.
Farewell to the bearded vultures
Yesterday, the last bearded vulture left Frankfurt Zoo to give birth at the breeding centre in Haringsee, Austria. This marks the end of keeping the native vulture species at Frankfurt Zoo for the time being.
Creation of a master plan for zoo development begins
Following the presentation of the ZOOKUNFT2030+ concept study in 2019, another important step in the zoo development process is now taking place. Based on the existing vision for Frankfurt Zoo, the masterplan will be drawn up in the coming months. In addition to concrete structural and design plans for large parts of the zoo grounds, both a cost plan and a timetable will be drawn up.
Farewell to the penguins - in part
Bye bye BIBO, TWEETY, PINKY & Co. A total of 36 Humboldt penguins are leaving the zoo. This reduces the Frankfurt group to 27 animals - for the time being, as the first eggs of the year have already been laid.
New at the zoo: A colony of naked mole rats has moved into its enclosure in the Grzimekhaus
Admittedly, they may not be the most beautiful animals living in Frankfurt Zoo, but they are extremely interesting: naked mole rats. With the help of the Friends of Frankfurt Zoo association, an enclosure has been built in the nocturnal animal house in recent months for this species, which lives underground and offers an insight into the hidden world of rodents.
Farewell to bonobo MARGRIT
Last Friday, female bonobo MARGRIT passed away at the age of 70. She was probably the oldest representative of her species and probably even the oldest ape in the current population.
Figures and data 2022 - the zoo takes stock
2022 was a year of relief, uncertainty and optimism for Frankfurt Zoo: the elimination of virtually all pandemic-related restrictions ensured visitor numbers reached pre-coronavirus levels and simplified work processes, while rising prices and energy uncertainty made it necessary to plan and implement emergency measures. Under its new management, however, the zoo was also able to set an important course for future development.
Nocturnal offspring among the aardvarks at Frankfurt Zoo
The aardvarks at Frankfurt Zoo have given birth. Shortly before Christmas, mum ERMINE gave birth to a healthy young animal. This brings the total number of aardvark births at the zoo to 35, making it one of the most successful zoos in the world for breeding this unusual mammal species.

Playground at the zoo shines in new splendour
The popular but ageing playground at Frankfurt Zoo has been remodelled and redesigned with the support of the Crespo Foundation and the Frankfurt Zoo Foundation. Natural materials have been used to create an attractive climbing landscape that invites children to exercise and play within sight of gorillas, keas and tree kangaroos. Today, the facility was handed over to the zoo's young visitors.
First offspring in the Red-crowned Lemurs
Premiere at Frankfurt Zoo: A little red-crowned mangabey was born on 23 November. Mum SOLEI is taking good care of her little son and is carrying him close to her body. For the zoo, this is the first offspring of this primate species, which is classified as endangered.

Together for species conservation - meeting of the species conservation working group and the science and research working group
In 2019, the Species Conservation Working Group was founded by the Association of Zoological Gardens (VdZ) and the Species Conservation Foundation at Frankfurt Zoo. The joint initiative aims to bundle the zoos' species conservation goals and activities and make them more visible, as well as to sharpen the species conservation programme of the Species Conservation Foundation. Three years after it was founded, the working group is now meeting again in the metropolis on the River Main - another scientific working group of the VdZ, the Science and Research Working Group, is also taking part.
New Sumatran tiger moves in
On 20 October, a Sumatran tiger moved into the cat jungle at Frankfurt Zoo. The eight-year-old female CINTA is still a little shy and uses the retreat areas of her new enclosure. So it will still take some patience to catch a glimpse of her.
New arrivals from Sweden: Two young fur seals have moved in
Reinforcements for the South African fur seals arrived at Frankfurt Zoo last Friday from Kolmården Zoo in Sweden. The two bulls FRANZ and DRAGON form a quartet with two females who came to the zoo in the summer.
Behavioural study with mirrors in Frankfurt's great and small apes
A team of scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig is investigating whether apes can recognise themselves in a mirror. The gorillas, bonobos, orangutans and gibbons at Frankfurt Zoo are also taking part in the study. For the animals, the study represents behavioural enrichment, and the researchers hope to gain new insights.
