World Ocean Day and EAZA's "Which Fish?" campaign

Not "How much is the fish?" but "Which Fish?" is the question asked by the European Association of Zoos (EAZA) not only on World Oceans Day.

The three main concerns of the "Which Fish?" campaign are

  1. sustainable fish consumption by us humans
  2. Feeding sustainably caught fish to zoo animals
  3. No wild-caught aquarium animals and increased focus on the conservation of endangered species, including fish and other aquatic species. These species thus also become important ambassadors for environmental education to draw attention to problems such as overfishing, microplastics, acidification and climate change.

Frankfurt Zoo is also participating in this campaign as an EAZA member. To kick off the campaign, our Education Department is presenting interesting facts about sustainable fish consumption in its display case in front of the Zoo School. The design of the showcase appeals to every age group.

Did you know that about 2 billion fish sticks are eaten in Germany every year? That corresponds to 66,000 tonnes (66,000,000 kg) of fish. If the oceans continue to be overfished, the entire marine ecosystem will suffer, because fish-eaters such as many penguin species lack food!

So: keep an eye out when buying fish!
